UNESCO commemorates World AIDS Day, 1 December 2006

UNESCO will commemorate World AIDS Day, 1 December 2006 with a series of events around the world. Events organised and/or co-organised by UNESCO include:

  • A consultation on supporting the needs of HIV-positive teachers in Eastern and Southern Africa, co-organised with EFAIDS partners – Education International, Education Development Center and World Health Organization (30 November to 1 December 2006, Nairobi, Kenya)
  • Capacity-building workshops for teachers (Quito, Ecuador)
  • Orientation workshops on “Youth and HIV” and Peer Education (New Delhi, India)
  • Forum on HIV and AIDS Education for teachers, educational planners and students, co-organised with UNAIDS, UNICEF, UNFPA and Ministry of Education (Islamabad, Pakistan)
  • Interactive theatre performances on HIV and AIDS, contributing to the events organised by UNAIDS cosponsors (Bamako, Mali)
  • Premier of theatre production “Arctic Revelation” based on testimonies of people living with HIV (Moscow, Russian Federation)
  • Lesson for Life, co-organised with Ministry of Education, National Commission for UNESCO and International NGOs (Jakarta, Indonesia)
  • Russian adaptation of the “HIV/AIDS and Human Rights: Young People in Action” Kit will be launched on the occasion of Worlds AIDS Day – 1 December 2006 during a press conference which will take place at Stella Art Gallery in Moscow. During the event, a documentary film: "Master Class of Alena Krivtsova for Children Living with HIV" sponsored by UNESCO will be screened. The Kit will also be presented at the Conference on Fighting HIV- Related Stigma and Discrimination, to be held on 1 December by the MGIMO "Moscow State Institute of International Relations, University of the MFA of Russia" with the support of UNESCO and UNAIDS.

  • Launch of the ToolKit on Theatre and HIV and AIDS on 30 November, Kampala, Uganda


  • Contemporary Arts in Response to HIV and AIDS on 1st December, Moscow, Russian Federation
  • A series of awareness-raising orientation sessions for UNESCO staff, within the framework of the UNESCO HIV/AIDS Workplace Policy. These sessions are open to everyone interested
